Community Night on Thursday, January 30

On Thursday, January 30 at Hugh Boyd Secondary, there will be a Community Night for all students with Aboriginal ancestry and their families. Please join us for chili, bannock and bingo! Dinner starts at 5:30. Dinner starts at 6:30. Please RSVP to lmccoll@sd38.bc.ca.

Moccasin Making Workshop at McRoberts

On Tuesday, January 28, 2014, there will be a moccasin making workshop for students with Aboriginal ancestry in Grades 10-12. The workshop will take place on a Day 2. It will begin at 8:30 am, and end at 3 pm. Students are asked to bring their own lunch. The moccasins are made of deerskin, beaded, and sewn with sinew. Students will also be learning traditional songs during the workshop.

Field trip to Ch'nook Cousins at UBC on January 15, 2014

A Ch’nook Cousins Event will be hosted by the University of BC, and the UBC Ch’nook Indigenous Business Education Department on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

The workshop is for Aboriginal youth in high school, who are interested in, or would like to learn more about a future in business. It will take place at the University of British Columbia First Nations Long House from 9:30 am until 2 pm. Lunch will be catered.

The purpose of the day is to introduce students to the many opportunities open to them, if they pursue an education in business or management. Information will be provided about where students can study business at a post-secondary level, what areas of study are available, and what support students can seek while attending college or university.

Field trip to ACCESS TRADES

ACCESS Trades sponsors a broad range of certified trades programs to create a diverse and skilled workforce throughout the urban Aboriginal community. They constantly strive to provide their clients with the best training available. Through their programs, ACCESS clients have embarked on long-term careers that are fulfilling and financially rewarding.

On Friday, December 13, a group from the Richmond School District will be visiting Access Trades to get some more information about their programs.

CAWAC 2013 Award Winners

Sixteen Aboriginal students from our district were named First Place winners of the Canadian Aboriginal Writing and Arts Challenge for 2013. They were honored at the Richmond School Board Office on October 7, 2013.

Crest Shield Workshops

Students around the district spent time this month creating personal Crest Shields which illustrated their family's animal crest, or a personal animal spirit. Students enjoyed spending time in community, and learning more about their Aboriginal culture.

Field trip to ACCESS at BCIT

On Friday, December 13, Richmond students with Aboriginal ancestry will be invited to a field trip to ACCESS Trades, a program at BCIT designed to increase training and apprenticeship opportunities in the Aboriginal community. Departure time from McNair Secondary will be at 8:30 am, and return time will be at 12:40 pm.

Awards and Scholarships

RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program, Award is up to $4,000 per year. Deadline to apply is Feburary 28, 2015.
YVR Arts Scholarship, deadline January 30, 2015. Up to 8 awards of $5000 each. Eligible Applicants: Are of BC First Nations ancestry Reside in BC and are between the ages of 16 and 26, are emerging artists whose artwork reflects the art forms of the BC First Nations, have the goal of becoming a professional artist, are accepted to study with a mentor or at a formal institution of learning, commit to attend the Scholarship Award ceremony in Vancouver on May 29th 2015 and the ceremony in recognition of the completed work, one year later, on May 27th 2016
Gilmore Church Scholarship, deadline, May 15. Award of $1000 to go to a student with Aboriginal ancestry who attends school in the Richmond School District. To apply: write a letter that shows evidence of: strong leadership skills (formally and/or informally); a connection to and pride for your cultural heritage; a commitment to service in the school or community; a consistent, focused approach to academic studies. Irving J. Barber Scholarship, deadline March 31. Awards of $1000-$5000 are available for Aboriginal students pursuing post-secondary education. See www.bcscholarship.ca/web/aborginal
BC Hydro Aboriginal Scholarships deadline - BC Hydro is proud to support education and skill development in B.C.'s Aboriginal communities and offers the following scholarships: • Eight $1,500 aboriginal scholarships, available to individuals who are status/non status Indians, Inuit or Métis and are residents of B.C. who plan to enroll in a full-time public post-secondary institution in Canada. Students pursuing an education in technology or engineering will be considered priority applicants, however general admission students are encouraged to apply. • One $2,000 Randy Brant Memorial scholarship based on a combination of academic achievement and outstanding community involvement.Completed scholarship packages should be post-marked on or before April 15 2014and mailed to: BC Hydro, Community Investment—Scholarship, 15th Floor, 333 Dunsmuir Street, Vancouver, B.C. Aboriginal Arts and Stories Contest. Create a writing or art piece that explores a moment or theme in Aboriginal history or culture. This year's deadline is March 31, 2014, and is open to Canadians of Aboriginal ancestry (Status, Non-Status, Inuit and Métis) between the ages of 14 - 29. (New this year: our competition is open to emerging writers and artists between the ages of 11-13!) A 200-400 word Artist’s or Author’s Statement that explains how your piece reflects or interprets the moment or theme you selected must accompany your entry into the Aboriginal Arts & Stories competition.
